Author Spotlight - J.R. Loveless

Everyone, please welcome J.R. Loveless today!

Tell us a little bit about yourself: Hi, my name is J.R. Loveless. I've been writing gay romance for over ten years now. It's something I discovered at a dark time in my life and helped me through that year and even longer. I started out watching Yaoi and eventually moved on from there to western-style gay romance. But before I did that, I started writing on a yaoi forum in the original fiction section and eventually built up a large following there. I can never thank my readers on Aarin enough because of their support I've been able to accomplish a dream I've had since I was in middle school!

I love reading gay romance as well especially paranormal (shifters, fated mates, etc) and hurt/comfort stories. I adore a strong, kind man stepping up to protect and help their mate or lover to overcome their past or present situation. That is why many of my stories trend that way, I suppose. I have strong characters and characters who learn to be strong as time goes on.

How would you describe your brand? What makes one of your books inherently YOU?

I think I kind of described this in the other area about me, but I think I tend to lean toward the hurt-comfort and the paranormal (primarily shifters). You won't find insta-love in my books and I do my best to make the characters as real and the plot line as real as possible.

Tell us about what you're currently working on.

I currently have about 10 books, novellas and novels, in progress. The stories just come to me. Unfortunately, time is a key factor along with my health, so I don't produce as fast as I would like. But my readers can rest assured, I won't stop writing, just may be a little slower than most.

I have a new shifter-verse I have been madly working on as I cannot pursue my True Mates series further just yet. I am almost 70k words into that one and there is still a lot left to resolve.

If you could dream cast your favorite book into a movie, whether yours or someone else's - what book would it be and who would you cast?

I would love to see my book Touch Me Gently made into a movie. The script would have to be polished better, but it's a novel I would love to see as a movie. Casting, hmm, I guess I never really thought about it before. I think Chris Hemsworth would make a great Logan. As for Kaden, no one comes to mind who would fit the character. I'd have to think on it a little harder for him.

What is the weirdest place you've ever written before?

I'd say in an airport food court or at work.

What does the writing process look like for you? What comes first? How do you start? When do you know you have a good idea vs a dream?

Stories hit me from many avenues. The most minor thing could trigger a thought and I write down the basic plot. When I start, I just start at Chapter One. I am more of a pantser vs a plotter so I just write where the wind takes me. I really know that I intend on pursuing the idea when it flows out of me easily without having to wrack my brain to get the ideas to come.

If you could write about any character or story that you haven't written about yet, what would it be and why?

I started a story years ago, a kind of co-authored story, but we considered it more of an RPG session where we would then share those on the forum both of us wrote on. My character was a tortured vampire named Sebastian whose lover died in the past and he blames himself. I would like to finish (in this instance I would have to start from scratch) his story, show his happy ending.

Which of your characters do you think is the most under appreciated and why?

I am not really sure I have an answer here. Maybe a side character. I honestly can't think of one right now.

What is your favorite book? One of yours and one of someone else's.

I would have to say I go back time and time to read Change of Heart by Mary Calmes. There's just something about that book that grabbed me from the beginning and never let go.

My own? I would say Touch Me Gently. It's my one book, while not written as well as many of my newer ones, that I think is the "baby" of the family of books I have out, so to speak. It's my first ever novel length story written, my first published book, and my most well-loved book by my readers.

Favorite show to binge watch?

This is so hard to choose! I love so many and have rewatched them several times over the years. The two that come to mind right now is Z Nation and Primeval.

What movie have you seen more times than you want to admit?

I love movies and I have no shame in admitting how many times I've seen one. My all time favorite movie which I've seen probably fifty times in my life is a slightly more obscure 80s movie called Legend.

Favorite quote or song lyric:

I don't really have a favorite lyric. I think songs really speak for themselves, if you listen close enough. One of the songs that speaks to me on many different levels is One More Light by Linkin Park.

Is there anything else you want anyone to know?

Someday, I would love to be able to write for a living. I know most authors say that and anyone who is an author can understand the desire for wanting to be able to create your own worlds and not answer to anyone else.
